Dory Themed Jello Aquariums
Ingredients
4 Mason jars
1 two-liter bottle lemon-lime soda, flat
4 oz of clear (unflavored or fruit juice flavor) gelatin
Blue food coloring
Handful of gummy fish (Swedish Fish)
1 bag of gummy Life Savers
1 two-liter bottle lemon-lime soda, flat
4 oz of clear (unflavored or fruit juice flavor) gelatin
Blue food coloring
Handful of gummy fish (Swedish Fish)
1 bag of gummy Life Savers
Directions
Usually when making this recipe, I unscrew the cap of the soda and let it sit out the night before. This way the soda is flat for when I make the jello the next day. If you do not have time, no worries! In this tutorial I actually used soda that as NOT flat and it still turned out great!
Pour one cup of the flat soda into a large bowl. Then gently sprinkle the gelatin evenly over soda. Let it sit for about 5 minutes to soften. While that is happening cut your gummy Life Savers into small pieces. I usually cut each piece into four quarters. This is so that they look like “pebbles” on the an aquarium floor. Place them at the bottom of each mason jar.
Then pour 2 cups of the soda in a small pan over medium heat. Right before it is about to boil, stir in the softened gelatin. Keep stirring until the gelatin completely dissolves. This usually takes about 2 minutes or so. Once that is done, remove the pan from the heat and add in the remaining soda and 2 drops of blue food coloring. If you would like the “jello aquarium water” to look darker, add in another drop or two. Stir to combine! Then pour the liquid into your mason jars.
Place the jars in the fridge to chill for several hours until set. Usually I just let them sit overnight.
When you are ready to serve the treat, use a sharp knife to make vertical slits in the gelatin. Make them a bit random.
Then place the fish into the jello aquarium. Make sure you put the fish in various spots and in different positions. Thi way it looks like the fish are swimming!
Make sure you keep the dessert refrigerated until serving. Also once the gummy fish are in the jello, you should serve within 6 hours. Once your kids see this fun dessert, smiles are sure to follow!
